Helpful Tips
This Month's Topic: Split Run Binding
March 2004
Occasionally, a project calls for more than one binding style, either by design or necessity. For example, an annual report project may call for some mechanically-bound versions in addition to the "main" run of perfect-bound reports for distribution to shareholders or high-profile clients. Likewise, while perfect binding may be the best choice for a run of product manuals, a few mechanically-bound versions are a must if they'll constantly be in the hands of salespeople.
At Allied Bindery, our suggestion to customers with these types of projects is to plan a "split run" of mechanical and adhesive-bound products. The result is a solution that offers the best of both worlds: the economy of perfect binding with the functionality of mechanical binding. Before you lay ink on paper, keep these important tips in mind:
- The versatility of mechanical binding is ideal for products that include mixed stocks and heavy ink coverage. For split run projects with these characteristics, we suggest using PUR adhesive binding. PUR is the strongest binding adhesive available, allowing you to use a single print run for each binding style without worrying about inks, coatings or mixed stocks compromising adhesion.
- Due to the different margin requirements of adhesive and mechanical binding, the printed area may need to be shifted to avoid punching into copy on the mechanically-bound copies. Consult us prior to printing to be sure all margins have been accounted for.
- If you want to give the mechanically-bound versions a higher-quality feel, consider switching stocks. Run the Wire-O books first with a #1 sheet, then switch to an uncoated stock for the adhesive-bound copies - without changing plates.
